Mannar Sri Lanka

Mannar is the foremost town of the Mannar District and is located on Mannar Island overlooking the Gulf of Mannar. The island’s isolated, underdeveloped location, along with adjoining Talaimannar, which is located on the northwestern coast, makes the area somewhat cumbersome to navigate and careful planning before departure is advised.

The primary attraction of this Northern Province is the excellent bird sanctuary, which attracts colorful flocks of migrating birds, generally from August up to April. The area moreover has some interesting historic affiliations like Adams Bridge which is mentioned in the Ramayana (an ancient epic poem from India). The town is also known for its baobab trees, destinations such as the historic Ketheeswaram temple and the fort erected by the Portuguese in 1560, then taken by the Dutch in 1658 and remodeled.
