The area surrounding the catchment basin of Minneriya tank was originally a wild life sanctuary and was subsequently designated as a national park. The tank itself is an important historic artifact, having been built King Mahasen in third century AD. Due to its location in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, the park is an important meeting point for the elephant population in the surrounding areas. The park is also home to a profusion of fauna and flora, including 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and 75 species of butterflies.
