National Parks

The phenomenon of conservation and the advent of national parks in Sri Lanka is a tradition that dates back to the time of the kings, like Mihintale the world’s first reserve, which was created in the third century BC. This historic precedent, along with the traditional Buddhist view of caring for all of nature’s creatures, has helped the island conserve its copious natural wealth. The island’s fortuitous juxtaposition, exposes it to two diagonally differing monsoon seasons.Couple this with a varying topography and dramatically different climatic conditions and you have an islands that contains the kind of biodiversity you could only hope to find on a much larger land mass. The localities listed here are just some of the most popular areas of interest, as designated by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
