Kandy is one of the island’s most important cities, having served as the last capital of the kings and then quickly transitioning into an administrative center during colonial rule, as well as a major province for tea plantation, owing to its mild climate. Today the city is an essential economic, religious and cultural hub as the capital of the central province. For those interested in Sri Lanka's colonial past or the affect it has on contemporary life, the city is a must visit. Liberally endowed with places of interest too numerous to mention, Kandy promises highlights like the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), a world UNESCO heritage since 1988. The city also host a series of engaging festivals and events throughout the year, chief among them being the Esala Perahera, held over 10 days and filled with light, colour, song and traditional pageantry. The Perahera is one of the most anticipated annual events, providing an eclectic mix of spirituality and expression. The festivities lead up to the Nikini poya (full moon) at the end of the month of Esala (July/August).
