Gampola located within the Kandy district, is an important landmark of culture and history, in fact the town was once the capital of the island, as appointed by King Buwanekabahu IV, who governed for four years in the mid fourteenth century, followed by King Buwanekabahu V, the city’s last king, who retained power for 29 years. Among the city’s many prominent attractions are some truly exceptional sights like the longest sleeping Buddha statue in South Asia, located at the Saliyalapura Temple as well as Lankathilaka, Gadaladeniya and EmbekkaDevalaya, which are home to numerous works of art, cultural artifacts, relics and impressive wood carvings.
