Trincomalee is a captivating city, ancient, resplendent and a center for communal life on the eastern coast, for as long as history has been recorded. The city is conceivably the historic site of Gokana in the Mahavamsa (Great Chronicle) and the city’s Shiva temple is the site of Trikuta Hill, as noted in the Hindu text VayuPurana. The city’s strategic location, an excellent deep-water port and natural harbor make it a coveted location for both economic and military purposes and was a stronghold of the British after their takeover in 1795. Today the city is one of the best developed on the East coast, easily accessible and ideal as a base from which to explore the rest of the region. Trincomalee’smultiethnic population encompasses ancestry as disparate as the descendants of freed Kaffir slaves, Portuguese colonizers and eastern traders.Giving the region its unique character, one reflected in the cultural and culinary pursuits of this inimitable littoral city.
