East Coast

The island’s East Coast it’s an excellent counterpoint to its Western shores, affording visitors a land of contrast; rural, isolated and brimming with its own unique culture and history. For decades the East remained inaccessible due to conflict, the 2004 tsunami further devastated the region, with the area finally regaining a sense of normalcy around 2007.

Today, very little of this turbulent past is immediately visible, most small towns that dot the eastern shores are quaint, idyllic fishing enclaves, unaffected by modernity. More recently, townships around places like Passekudah Bay, have seen a slew of development catering primarily to tourist, this in turn makes navigating the area much easier and even the uninitiated can discover the wide expanses of the east with ease. Tucked away, among the better known locales are quaint attractions like the 7 Hot Spring at Kanniyai, a short distance along the Anuradhapura road.

The capital of the east is Trincomalee, a critical port with a gorgeous natural harbor, architecture that speaks of a colonial past and some of the islands most photogenic cultural edifices. Numerous small towns also provide an excellent departure from the norm of plush beach-side resorts, rewarding those who seek an altogether different experience, one underscored by dazzling seashores with fine sand, estuaries, lagoons and an assortment of other regional curiosities.
