Nilavelilies approximately 10km to the north of Trincomalee. This beautiful bit of coastline which is possibly one of the best in the world, is also accompanied by a long and storied past. As a center of maritime activity the area has been a trading port connecting the old world and the new, it was visited by the Duke of Wellington and Horatio Nelson.Later as a British Colonial base it was attacked during the Second World War, by Japanese fighters. Apart from the customary sea side frolic, the area holds a few treasures well worth a visit, Pigeon Island is an excellent locale for snorkeling and diving, as is the more sporadically visited Coral Island. Withbrilliant visibility, unspoiled beaches, a cornucopia of marine life and numerous shipwrecks, there’s always plenty to see and do, along these exotic eastern shores.
