Dickwella is a lovely little costal town located approximately 20 Kilometers east of Matara. The area is famous for its pristine sandy beaches and shallow clear warm waters, conditions brought about due to fortification by headlands, reefs and sand-bars. Dickwella through most of the year provides an excellent location for swimming, snorkeling and diving, even surfing is possible away from the main bay. The area has also been a favorite among expatriates and hosts a small community of foreign residents, some of whom have opened establishments of their own, giving visitors a wider selection of facilities from which to choose.
The town is also home to the largest seated Buddha statue, which is 50 meters (160 ft.) tall and accompanied by a myriad of colorful paintings, frescos and other interesting works of art, depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha and other associated articles.
